Empowerment. That’s the word Dreama Carter uses over and over again. Dreama sees her new health and wellness venture as more than just another family-run business, she envisions it as an opportunity to impact both individuals and her community in the Charlotte, North Carolina area. Her partners (who happen to be her son, daughter and daughter-in-law) repeat the same hope, too. “We see our services as empowering--well, everyone, really,” Dreama says.
House of Dreamz, the soothing name of Dreama’s new business, opens in January 2021, just in time for the latest batch of New Year’s resolutions. However, Dreama and her family won’t be offering any overnight, quick-fix cures. Daija Thomas, Dreama’s daughter, refers to better wellness as a “journey.”
In fact, Daija’s own health journey during the pandemic helped inspire the business. “Starting in March, I just decided for myself that I wanted to take my health a lot more seriously. Basically, I stopped making excuses.” She notes the tragedy of COVID-19 gave her the rare opportunity to focus and prioritize. “I feel like throughout the pandemic I was able to focus on myself and not only work on myself externally but also internally. And I made significant progress.” Daija hopes to share her experience with others to, “help them along their journey and… with their self-esteem. Sometimes you can get lost in the pounds and the number on the scale. There are things outside of our control. But a whole lot is within our control and we want to make sure that we maximize those things.”
That idea of helping others and building self-confidence is a key part of House of Dreamz’s mission. “We all know outward appearance is connected to self-confidence,” Dreama says. That’s what led them to their flagship procedure, body sculpting through lipo cavitation.
You may not have heard of the procedure before, but imagine something similar to liposuction without the negatives of surgery. Lipo cavitation is a noninvasive procedure that destroys fat cells by using low-frequency sound waves. Once the fat cell is destroyed, the fat is discharged between the cells where it is turned into protein and eventually changed into fatty acids and glycerol.  Later, it is broken down and released. This begins the metabolic process, transporting the waste matter to the liver. There it is flushed out through the lymphatic and urinary systems.
Lipo cavitation is a safe, non-invasive, painless procedure with little-to-no downtime (just drink plenty of water after a session). It is also much cheaper than surgical options, making it an affordable choice for most people. Plus, you might need to travel to a metropolitan hub like Atlanta, Miami, or Dallas for those surgical alternatives.
Da’Sean Carter, Dreama’s son, describes what makes their service different. “Compared to places that offer similar procedures, their prices [are] two to three times as much as ours. That’s the first thing that sets us apart. The second is that often bigger facilities are less personable. You get less of that one-on-one direct contact. Our setup isn’t small, but it's a little more comfortable… and we can build that rapport.” He went on to say, “A lot of times when [other companies] have these types of services it’s more about the money, they just want to get you in and out. But with us, we're gonna be a lot more personable because we care… almost like we're friends.”
Dreama adds, “And if you take into account the amount of money you would have to pay to travel to you know, Miami, to get the airplane ticket, to be put up in the hotel, then actually do this type of treatment--which has a lot more downtime, a lot more risks and side effects, because you're going to be put under… Most folks don't have that type of money or don't want to take that type of risk. Ours is the perfect option because it's a slow but pronounced effect. That means you’ll come in for more than one session. So it's not like you should expect to come in one time and you walk out looking like Beyoncé. Depending on your target area, it can take 6 to 12 sessions and should go hand-in-hand with other lifestyle changes like exercising.”
Besides body sculpting, House of Dreamz offers teeth whitening and gem services. Teeth discoloration can be caused by poor hygiene, food, tobacco, medications, or even genetics. While whitening mouthwashes and toothpaste can remove some extrinsic strains, they may not be able to whiten intrinsic ones. Extrinsic stains appear on the surface of your teeth while intrinsic stains live between the micro-cracks in your enamel and deep within your dentin (the layer of your tooth underneath the enamel). Additionally, if you’re feeling particularly flashy, House of Dreamz offers teeth gems to add some extra glitz to that new pearl-white smile.
Completing the family foursome, Dreama’s daughter-in-law, Joiyah McCrorey specializes in customized nails. Joyiah explains what makes her nails special, “A lot of women are kind of scared or skeptical about going into a nail salon due to COVID, so I came up with this great idea. I've always been interested in nails and I wanted to be able to provide people the experience to design their own nails and also be able to take them on and off whenever. I found a way to make this easier with simple press-on nails. Then if they want a set to match an outfit or need a change, they can do it without any hassle. And since it is customized, the customer can place an order and pick the shape, design, color, if they want rhinestones, you name it. They don’t even have to be fitted at the store, I have a sizing kit, and they can just pick them up.”
Along with these great services, House of Dreamz offers detox packages, healing jewelry, organic oils, and soaps. They also have scrubs, natural organic supplements, and lotion, plus CBD products.
Dreama says her family always wanted to go into business together and the pandemic gave them the opportunity. “We’re all working from home and had more time... We work really well together and all have unique expertise. Each one of us makes up a different piece of the puzzle when we do put them all together.” She adds her hopes for empowerment -- remember that word? -- come from her personal story. “I was a teenage mother and have been a single mom for years now. I had Da’Sean at 14, so our relationship is extremely tight as it was for all of my daughters and my daughter-in-law. And so I have four daughters and then I have Joiyah so I call that five daughters. And throughout the years, it hasn't always been easy, you know, but we've always been dedicated to challenging ourselves and holding on to the memories we have together.”
That dedication and kindness is something Dreama hopes people will walk away with after visiting House of Dreamz. “Let us go on this journey with you. We’ll customize your plan, according to your journey. Our deeper purpose and passion is to empower people in our community. So we hope you’ll not only feel good about yourself after using our services but walk away feeling rejuvenated and even a little more educated about the procedures we offer.”
You can visit House of Dreamz at 78 Church Street NE, Concord, NC 28025. Grand opening on January 9, 2021.
